This raises one minor question: If I do this, I'm watching DVD video on the TV while hearing the DVD audio going from the DVD player to the TV and then to the receiver, and finally coming out my speakers. Then I'd turn on the TV, select the DVD as its source, and turn on the receiver and select the proper audio source to hear the sound through the receiver and Polk speakers. I'd connect the optical cord to the optical output on the TV and to the optical input on the receiver. You can even use your receivers 'CD' or 'Tape' input, if needed. These inputs are oftentimes labeled Aux (auxiliary), Line In, Analog In, etc. Simply plug the turntables audio signal cable into one of the receivers analog audio inputs. To watch an opera DVD and listen to its audio through my receiver and my Polk speakers, I'd first connect the DVD audio and video to my TV using RCA cords. The receiver does not have a built-in phono preamp. I'd select the TV as the TV's video/audio input source. Then, to watch just plain TV I'd turn on just the TV. So if I understand you correctly, I could just buy a new receiver that could accept an optical input from my TV. I can connect my DVD player to my TV with RCA cords. Right now, my std direcTV receiver can only connect to my TV via coax. This 'How-to' video from our Product Support team will supply you with the information you need for connecting your speakers. Let me make sure I understand, since this is starting to make sense. That would leave me with my orig question: how should I hook up the LG TV, the new receiver (which I presume will have HDMI inputs and outputs whether I need them or not for the DVD and CD), and a new HD-capable direcTV receiver, if I decide to do that too? But since the TV only has the one optical audio output, how do I get audio between the TV and the receiver? Do HDMI cables work that way on a TV that only has the optical output? Since the DVD and CD players don't have HDMI outputs, but they do all have RCA plugs, it seems to me that I could still just connect them to the new receiver using the same RCA cords I'm using now.

That's what got me started thinking about how to connect the new one to the LG TV and to my existing DVD and CD players. Since I'm thinking about buying a new receiver, I am aware that new ones come with HDMI inputs and outputs. I am thinking about buying a new receiver, for that reason alone. This whole question arises because my current Onkyo receiver's left channel is starting to drop out occasionally. I apologize for making your effort to help me harder than it should have been!:smileyconfused: I'm embarrassed to admit that I was hopelessly confused when I wrote my orig post. My Toshiba DVD player (probably about 5-10 years old I forget) has only RCA plug inputs and outputs. My 40-yr old JVC CD player has only RCA plug inputs and outputs. My LG TV has 3 HDMI inputs but only one optical audio output. My current 40-yr old Onkyo receiver has only RCA plug inputs no HDMI or optical input.

As a result the sound from the right rear needs to be turned up. Which Onkyo app, if any, will allow me to adjust the volume of front left, front right, center, etc.? I want to fine tune the volume levels as my rear speakers are not the same distance from the listening area.the right rear is much further away as compared to the left rear.

I do not know if the app makes this possible. I need the possibility to control the volume of pre out zone 2 of the Onkyo TX-RZ810 with my smartphone. Is it possible to control zone 2 (and/or zone 3) pre out volume of the Onkyo TX-RZ810 with the app? although you may be able to connect it to the CD output.

There might be a way to connect an external Bluetooth receiver to this unit, but there isn't an "auxiliary out" on the back. Unfortunately you cannot directly connect your Samsung Galaxy S5 to TX-8511. New Not sure if it is even possible or not. Trying to connect the dinosaur to today's technology. I have tried: Don't even know what to try. Most people probably don't have this receiver still operational. Is there a way to listen to music using my Samsung Galaxy S5.
